These tests are for screening. A result is not a diagnosis: only a psychiatrist or psychologist can make one, after talking with you.
Your answers are scored on this device and never sent. Only your result is saved, with the email address you confirm.
Confirm your email address
Before the test we send a 6-digit code to your email address. Your result is saved with it, so that our team can help you if you wish. The email with the code contains no health information.
For each question, choose the answer that best describes your smoking.
Choosing an answer takes you to the next question. You can go back at any time.
Your result
Very low dependence
Your answers point to very low physical dependence on nicotine. Every cigarette still affects your health; if you want to stop, a doctor or a stop-smoking clinic can guide you.
Low dependence
Your answers point to low physical dependence on nicotine. Quitting is often easier at this level; a doctor or a stop-smoking clinic can support you.
Moderate dependence
Your answers point to moderate physical dependence on nicotine. You may have withdrawal symptoms such as cravings or restlessness when you stop; seeing a doctor lets you consider the support and medicines that would suit you.
High dependence
Your answers point to high physical dependence on nicotine. Noticeable withdrawal symptoms can be expected when you stop; medical support and stop-smoking treatments improve the chances of quitting. We recommend seeing a doctor or a stop-smoking clinic.
Very high dependence
Your answers point to very high physical dependence on nicotine. Stopping on your own can be hard; stop-smoking treatment under medical supervision, with regular support, improves the chances of quitting. We recommend seeing a doctor or a stop-smoking clinic.

Take your result as a rough guide, not a diagnosis. How you feel over time, and a conversation with a specialist, tell much more than a questionnaire.
Talk it through with a specialist
If your result worries you, or you would like to talk it through, our psychiatrists can review it with you, free and without obligation.

About this test
The Fagerström test is the most widely used test for assessing cigarette dependence; it was developed by Karl O. Fagerström and colleagues to measure physical dependence on nicotine. It has 6 questions and takes about 2 minutes; the points for your answers are added up to give your level of dependence. The result is not a diagnosis, but it can guide a conversation with a doctor about quitting.
